I am sure that you can setup user accounts in windows 2000 and limit access to the file system.

I don't have a windows 2000 box (or more usfully network) running here at the moment, so I can't play. I am also sure that you can apply the restrictions to the NT domain logins.

Another thought...if these computers are just for internet browsing, do we need to limit access? Just put internet explorer on there, remove install rights and re-image regularly. No headaches, and they can't bugger a system with nothing on it - beyond stopping it working!

Gareth,

I know this sounds BAD but employees are jerks...  They want to waste time and play with things they shouldn't.    They work ethic today is to see what you can get away with....

Lockdowns the only way to prevent.

I know, and this is the ultimate lock down - they can play all they like, but there is nothing to break.

We use this a lot in open access labs...lock them as much as possible, but put nothing on there really - and keep a generic backup of the drive (we do this for all machines, which are grouped). The buggers mess up - reimage over the network.

We can reformat an entire room in about 30 min now - and only ten of that is work . I would suggest this stratagy for any network - any problem reimage the hard drive.

Remember our network techs have to deal with the worst possible users - electrical engineering students. They ae malicous and skilled! The network stays up and usable with the minimum effort (now )

Suppose it shows the differences in purposes. All we care about with the open lab machines is that word works, and you can get online - tweaking is a reimage over the network!

As it is an electrical engineering department, those in the private labs are well looked after - and the people driving them by and large really know what they are doing.

If all networks were the same, then network admins would be out of a job and a piece of software could do the lot...gives me an idea

Ah, I don't think system admins. will ever be out of jobs myself. But, I'm 50, so I don't have to worry about that. You young bucks do.

I have soooo many people involved in this that it's disturbing !! It appears that the GPO's will have to be the way until SOMEONE (hint, hint) writes a software package that can do want I want. SHOULD someone do that, think how rich they'd be in six months !!

Oh well. What I want apparently does not exist, so we're working in the lab with GPOs in an attempt to lock it down as best we can. NOT nearly what I want, but it'll have to do apparently.

Thanks for the help guys. We are working with many of the thoughts here. As soon as we come up with the best we can, I'll post the procedure.
