Well, I am writing this message on my early 2006 Macbook:
1.83GHz Core Duo 512MB RAM 60GB HD OS 10.4
It was the most basic Mac made in mid 2006 when I bought it, and it's lasted me through five years of university and then some. I guesstimate that this computer has around 20,000 hours of use on it. Lately it has been starting to do some quirky things (crashing) but in terms of the hardware not a single thing has gone wrong with it in that time. Works like a charm. It is just too slow for me now.
Of course Apple products are fairly expensive, and I don't want to pay full price for anything, so I'd been watching their Refurbished store for a while now. Their refurb products are mostly trade show models, or units returned by customers with a defective part that get fixed. I'm told they work like new and look like they may have been used for a few hours. Plus you don't get the fancy packaging.
So I just ordered a 13" Macbook Pro:
2.3GHz Core i5 4GB RAM 320GB HD OS 10.7
On the whole I'll end up with 8X as much RAM, 5X the transistor count, 30% processor clock speed increase, plus hyper threading, turbo-boost, and 64 bit OS (only had 32 before) not to mention a sexy new computer that doesn't look like it's been through a couple of wars.
Can't wait for it to arrive!
Oh, and because of the refub deal, it cost me $200 less than normal, and actually less than what the non-Pro (white one) would have cost!
My Daughter also just bought a new Mac. her HP wouldn't run some of the design software She needed for Her senior year. She thinks the Mac is fabulous.Billy Member since Feb. 15 2008

They are pricey, but when I consider that my parent's PC laptops have usually given up or had something seriously wrong with them after probably 18 months on average, and just how much I enjoy using my macs on the whole, I think it's worth spending the extra dough. You may need to reasses the total hours estimate....
Let's assume you bought it 4/1/2006 (not quite mid 2006) it is about 2000 days from that date to 90/30/2011.. that means you were using the computer 10 hours per day evey day..which seems unlikely.
That being said 5 years on a laptop computer is fairly impressive as they do get significantly more abuse that a desktop model. I am a Weekend Warrior www.theauthorities.net \m/ -_- \m/
I know Ron, that's exactly how I came up with that number. 10 hours a day.
It may actually be more than that.
First of all, I essentially didn't turn the computer off for about the first three years of its life (just put it in SLEEP mode when not in use), so I'm completely disregarding that fact.
Through school I would basically turn it on first thing in the morning, around 8am, and use it all day to take notes in all my classes (average about 5-6 hours a day).
I have never owned a TV or DVD player, so I watched all my TV on it for the last five years, and all my movies. Maybe an hour a day.
I did good chunks of my practicing with it recording me, or playing along with music (that it was playing, since I don't have a walkman).
I used it for Skype to my family and girlfriend, because I had no long distance on my phone.
I left it on working overnight probably average 2-3 nights a week average over the last five years, downloading TV shows, etc. Mostly all at the beginning as I've decided to (mostly) give up downloading.
Plus all the emails, paper writing, drum forum time , reading, research. I wrote an entire paper without visiting an actual library by using online databases like J-Store just to see if I could.
It's actually pretty wild when I think about all the stuff I use my computer for. And the list is increasing. I think 20,000 is actually a VERY reasonable estimate.

I sat around waiting all morning for my computer to arrive.
I had to run an errand that needed to get done before noon. I planned to be home all afternoon.
I was out of the house for 20-25 minutes at most. And of course that's EXACTLY when UPS decides to show up with the computer. So now I have to wait until tomorrow to get it. Member since at least October 2005!
