I did a jazz gig this afternoon and took out my Allegra custom built kit with the wood hoops. Hadn't used them for a while, for no apparent reason. While, as I've mentioned here before, the entire kit is really great, the snare soars above all others. If your in the market for a great snare, you should consider the Allegra with wood hoops. It is a killer. And if your like me, you'll get the rest of the set to go with it. lol

I give it 6 stars out of a possible 5.

Cool!

Have they improved with time? I've noticed that phenomenon with a number of my DIY builds.

I honestly don't know, but I think most drums do. I've certainly noticed it with my Gretsch kit, approaching it's 26th birthday, and my DW kit going on 11. The Allegra really aren't that old yet.

I think part of it is a learning process for the owner. You become more familiar and comfortable with the sound.

@Gene - yeah, I'm really starting to notice it over the past six months or so with my DIY kit, which is now about five or six years old...I think. (The memory is the first thing to go...I think.)

Err...
