| With great difficulty.
Like most of this the music business, it's being stood in the right place at the right time. Sorry, it's not helpful but true. The guy organising it needed someone with some experience of being on the road, I was free for it and..... that's it.
It's pretty much a closed shop (like sessioning) as people will only use the tried and tested and as far as teching goes, I'm still more looking in than looking out. But you never know what the next phone call will bring.
IE #1: A friend of mine played on a demo for free years ago and forgot all about it. The demo ended up with Robert Plant, he like the song, asked who the drummer was and within days he became his recording and touring drummer.
IE #2: Even more years ago, I was chatting to a drummer friend about the latest bunch of 'drummer wanted' ads in Melody Maker (RIP) and he said he was going for one in London (we lived in Manchester at the time, about 300 miles north); "Drummer Wanted for name rock band".
I thought he was mad going all that way for what was likely to be a bunch no hopers. Never heard from him again, he'd joined AC/DC.
hey-ho..........
But I did get his job in the band he left and years of rock obscurity followed..... | | Message posted 1615 days ago | IP Logged |

| Oh - and business cards! Always have them about your person, in the car, stickbag, gig bag, wallet etc etc.
I got a call last Friday from an Alice Cooper tribute band, needed a drummer, the singer had got a card off me about a year ago when I played a £40 pub gig and he was there. Kept it in his wallet.....
So, I had 24 hours to learn 2 hour set, rehearsed Sunday, first of handful of gigs starts tomorrow! Yay! Good payers too! Double yay!

| Gig was OK, I like 'dangerous' gigs. The bass player was great, good on stage comms, well, he saved my life when I lost my way (several times). The audience loved it, the band got re-booked and the band boss was very pleased with my playing. Nice to play some 'flexible' rock and roll again after a long while.
And I got paid (+exp) so I'll chalk that one up to success. Same again next Saturday, I hope the blonde with the big knockers who hugged me after the gig is there again...........

| She was 'intimidating'. Sadly, she didn't indimidate me to the degree I would have preferred. | | Message posted 1602 days ago | IP Logged |
