In 1950 Katsumi Yanagisawa started manufacturing drums, and formed a company named ‘Pearl Industry, Ltd.’ Before the company was formed, Katsumi had manufactured musical stand in Tokyo, Japan during 1946.
‘Pearl Industry Ltd’ changed its company name in 1953 to ‘Pearl Musical Instrument Company’. At this point, Pearl was manufacturing a much broader variety of products, including drum kits and cymbals.
In 1957 Katsumi’s son Mitsuo started helping to export Pearl products across the world. In 1961 a factory in Chiba, Japan was established to help meet demand. Much of the demand of the era was attributed to the popular type of music of the period, Rock and Roll!
Currently Pearl owns five factories and supplies world wide, and is one of the largest drum manufacturers in the world.
